Did you know this about the Japanese language?
- Until about 2,400 years ago, the Japanese language had no written characters.
- The first writing system used by the Japanese was Chinese writing. This is often referred to as a character-based writing system, although in fact every type of writing system is a character-based writing system.
- After the introduction of kanji, it became clear that the Japanese language was much richer than the characters in use. For this reason, a phonetic alphabet was developed twice. As a result, Japanese has no fewer than four writing systems. But don’t let that intimidate you: in a Japanese course at Babel, you’ll be introduced to the richness of the Japanese language and culture in an accessible way.
- Some Japanese words have Dutch origins, thanks to the flourishing trade of the 16th and 17th centuries. For example, “beker” (biikaa) and “pistool” (pisutoru).
